Abstract

<PICT:0892530/III/1> An electrically heatable element comprises a metal filament embedded in a layer or layers of an oxide or other refractory material forming a coating or pellet and a layer of catalyst upon said coating or pellet. As shown, the element comprises a helical coil 57 of a platinum group metal surrounded by a layer 58 of silica or alumina which is formed by applying successive portions of a paste or solution of a compound to the wire and after the application of each portion, passing an electric current to heat the wire. A catalytic layer 59 is obtained by applying a solution comprising palladous chloride, chlorplatinic acid and aluminium nitrate. If desired a further coating of alumina may then be provided and by heating to 1000 DEG C. the catalytic components diffuse therethrough. The elements may be used in a Wheatstone bridge circuit in gas analysis apparatus. A compensating element may comprise also chromium oxide or other catalyst poison thereby suppressing oxidation of combustible gases. Such a material may also be added when the element is used in the type of apparatus shown in Specification 892,531.
