Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a gas detecting element which excels in the sensitivity and the quality, by twisting together the two pieces of coated wires in which the core wire of platinum or the like is covered a the metal oxide semiconductor.
CONSTITUTION: For instance, the Pt-Sn alloy containing about 0.1W1wt% tin is made to pass through the die to form two wires 1 and 2 having a thin diameter each. These two wires are then twisted together to form gas adsorbing part 3 along with lead parts 4W7 provided across part 3. Then the electric conduction is given to wire 1 between lead parts 5 and 6 as well as to wire 2 between parts 4 and 7 each. These two wires are then heated up in the air to about 1,000°C and for about one hour in order to form the layer of metal oxide semiconductor composed of the tin dioxide crystal and having 100W1,000Å thickness or so on the surface of wires 1 and 2 each. Then wires 1 and 2 are coated to obtain a gas detecting element. Using of this element, the heating power source is connected be between lead parts 5 and 6 to heat up part 3 up to about 200W250°C. Then the electric output between parts 4 and 5 is measured to secure detection of the gas.
