Abstract
<PICT:0746266/III/1> <PICT:0746266/III/2> A contact element comprises spiral coils 1a, 1b of electrical resistance wire arranged in parallel, slightly-spaced-apart relationship, and with the turns of one coil in alignment with the spaces between the turns of the other coil. The coils are made from a continuous length of wire and are connected at their centres by a loop B, and have leads 3, 4 whereby current is passed through them in series. A thin mica strip 2 separates the coils so that a gas may pass through them. The surface of the coils may include a thin coating of catalytic inorganic oxide such as catalytic alumina, beryllia, magnesia or thoria, or mixtures thereof, this film being impregnated with a small concentration of a catalytic metal such as platinum, palladium, silver &c. A number of such elements may be spaced along a heat insulated ceramic tube through which a gaseous stream is passed, e.g. an air stream contaminated with smoke or cooking odours &c.
