Abstract

605,386. Non-metal resistances; temperature variable resistances. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Dec. 2], 1945, No. 34662. Convention date, Jan. 8. [Class 37] A thermo;sensitive resistor is made from a composition of magnetite and ferric oxide with a glass phase which acts as a bond. In use, as shown resiliently mounted in a thermostatic unit 16 which is screwed into the engine head 14 of an automobile for operation in the latter's engine temperature indicating system, Fig. 1 (not shown), the composition of the resistor 36 is 71.1 per cent magnetite, 8.9 per cent ferric oxide, 10 per cent borosilicate glass and 10 per cent magnesium borate glass. To produce the resistor 36, this mixture after initial treatment is granulated and pressed into rods which may have flattened sides, Fig. 3 (not shown), and which after further selective treatment are heated in a hydrogen atmosphere at 1600‹ C. to melt the glass content and bond the materials together. The resistor ends 56 are coated with copper which latter may also be sprayed over the whole surface to adjust. the registivity to 27 ohms per c.m. at 25‹ C. for a rod resistor having dimensions 1 inch Î “ inch and a temperature coefficient 3 per cent per C. For applications other than the above, the mixture may have a small content of other metallic oxides.
