Abstract
1,182,894. Liquid fuel burner. R. S. BABINGTON. 24 June, 1968 [23 June, 1967], No. 30039/68. Heading F4T. A liquid fuel burner comprises a burner chamber 1 fitted with a cover 5, having a central opening 7, and within chamber 1 is situated a plenum chamber 20, which plenum chamber includes an upper spherical part 21 having an aperture 23 in its upper surface and a lower tubular chamber 25 having a closed pointed base 27, the burner also comprising a conduit 29 to supply air under pressure to plenum chamber 20, whence it is emitted via aperture 23, and a conduit 31 to supply liquid fuel to the exterior surface of the spherical part 21 of plenum chamber 20, on which surface 21 the fuel forms a liquid film which is disposed by air emitted through aperture 23 to give an atomized spray, which passes through opening 7 to be burnt. A funnelled collector 13 is disposed below the pointed base 27 of plenum chamber 20 to collect excess fuel, which is recirculated. A supply of secondary air is introduced into burner chamber 1 through apertures 41, 41<SP>1</SP> in the wall of chamber 1. The effective size of these apertures 41, 41<SP>1</SP> and hence the quantity of secondary air supplied may be altered by means of a rotatable collar 35 around chamber 1 containing apertures 39, 39<SP>1</SP>, which apertures 39, 39<SP>1</SP> may be aligned to a greater or lesser extent with apertures 41, 41<SP>1</SP> to alter their effective size. In a modification, (not shown) the upper spherical part of the plenum chamber is removable and replaceable. The replacement of one spherical part by another of different construction may be used to alter the combustion characteristics of the burner. In a further modification, (not shown) a plurality of apertures is included in the upper spherical part of the plenum chamber. In a still further embodiment, (not shown) the effective size of the central opening in the cover of the burner chamber may be altered by means of an iris-diaphragm shield arrangement.
