Abstract

1,173,005. Suspension bridges. KAWADA KOGYO K.K. 29 Nov., 1966, No. 53409/66. Heading E1G. A suspension bridge having concrete decking 10 on a hanger-supported girder structure 1 is built by a method which avoids final dead-load bending stresses in the girder. In the method described (a) the suspended girder structure is rivetted together in the required camber but with its ends spaced above its end abutment shoes 8A (Fig. 2, not shown); (b) the outer hangers are progressively lengthened (e.g. by turnbuckles 6, 7) so that the girder ends droop on to the shoes 8A - i.e. the girder is bent to an exaggerated camber (Fig. 3, not shown); and (c) the concrete decking is constructed on the girder so'that under its weight the girder is flattened to its original unstressed arch form. In an alternative method the suspended girder is built up with its ends resting on the abutment shoes 8A and is then bent to an exaggerated camber by shortening the central hangers.
