Abstract

1326796 Suspension bridges DYCKERHOFF & WIDMANN KG 14 Aug 1970 [18 Aug 1969 (2)] 39414/70 Heading E1G In a suspension bridge utilizing a stiffening girder 4 of box form having solid walls, a single central suspension cable 2 is used from which the girder is suspended by suspension elements 3 having articulated connections with the upper wall 8 of the girder, whereby the combined bending and torsional stresses on the bridge which occur when two cables are used and the oscillations which then take place in opposite directions along the cables are avoided. The girder, which is provided with perforated bands 14 secured to the outer edges of walkways 13 to reduce the effect of wind gusts. is made of adequate strength to resist twisting under unbalanced loads. To further increase the stability of the bridge, the cable 2 comprises a number of juctaposed tensioning members embedded in concrete which increases its weight and resistance to flexing. The cable 2 is suspended between two pylons 1 each of A shape each of which is guyed by two similarly constructed retaining cables 6, the tensioning members of cables 1 and 6 being crossed over each other in the head of the pylon before being anchored therein.
