Abstract
1,171,819. Thermocouples. ENGELHARD MINERALS & CHEMICALS CORP. 12 Dec., 1967, No.56517/67. Heading H1K. [Also in Division C7] A thermocouple for the measurement of high temperature has a positive leg consisting of 96-98% tungsten and 2-4% rhenium and a negative leg of 74-80% tungsten, 26-20% rhenium, a lead wire consisting of 95-97% nickel and 5-3% tungsten connected to the negative leg and a lead wire consisting of 9-97À5% nickel, 1À5-2À2% chromium, 0À7- 1À1% aluminium, 0À3-1% silicon and 0-1À2% tungsten connected to the positive leg. The arrangement is so constructed that when the temperature to be measured is up to 2700 C. the temperature at the junctions between the thermocouple legs and the compensating leads lies in the range 0-400 C. The quoted percentage compositions of the thermocouple legs, which are by weight, exclude traces of thorium, oxide, potassium, aluminium and silicon which may be added to the alloys to control grain growth. The thermocouple is preferably mounted in vacuum or in an atmosphere of hydrogen, helium, argon or a nitrogen-hydrogen mixture.
