Abstract

A homogeneous composition for use in powder metallurgical production of an oxidation resistant alloy consists of (by weight): Al 15-70%, N 5-35%, Si 10-55%, B 0-45%, the Si and B together constituting at least 25%. The constituents may be present as Al, Si, Si3N4 or AlN. Alternatively, N or additional N may be introduced by sintering in N. B may be added as the free element, B4C, BN, B2O3 or H3BO3. The composition may be shaped by cold pressing at 5000-60,000 lb./inch2, by slip casting or by extrusion followed by sintering in air, vacuum or nitrogen at 900-1700 DEG C. Alternatively, the composition may be hot pressed at 900-1700 DEG C. and at least 1000 lb./inch2. The mechanical properties of the alloy are stated to be improved by prolonged heating in air. The resultant alloy may be used for parts necessarily resistant to high temperature, for electrical resistance elements, as shielding in nuclear reactors and for parts requiring high thermo-electric power.
