Abstract

A thermo-couple, particularly for use for electro-thermal refrigeration, comprises at least one element composed of a solid solution of Bi2 Te3 and Sb2 Te3, the atomic proportion of Sb atoms being between 24% and 36%, preferably 28%, and that of Bi atoms being between 4% and 16%, preferably 12%. The solid solution may contain up to 1% by weight of at least one element of the VIth Group of the Periodic System, e.g. S and/or Se (preferably 0,6% by weight). The thermo-couple element, which may be used with a second element of n-type Bi2 Te3 containing 0,1% by weight of Ag I, is prepared by the fusion of Bi2 Te3 and Sb2 Te3, the solid solution so formed being pulverised and worked up by powder metallurgy; the grain size, pressure, and sintering temperature, time, and atmosphere are chosen to produce satisfactory thermo-electric properties. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 834,593.
