Abstract
1,015,111. Thermo - electric elements. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 3, 1962 [Jan. 3, 1961], No. 229/61. Heading H1K. In a thermo-electric element the carrier concentration is varied throughout the length of the element so that for any particular region of the element the carrier concentration is such as to give optimum thermo - electric figure of merit for the particular temperature expected at that region when the thermo-element is subject to the temperature gradient expected in operational use. The carrier concentration is varied either by varying the composition of the element or the impurity concentration of the element. Fig. 3 shows a die 11 containing a thermoelectric element comprising sections 1 to 8 each having different composition and/or impurity concentration. Each section may be preformed and then the sections joined, e.g. by soldering or pressure. Alternatively each section may comprise a batch of powdered, sintered or alloyed semi-conductor material, e.g. Bismuth Telluride having a selected composition or containing a selected concentration of an activator impurity, e.g. lead or copper iodide, the assembly being compacted by pressure and then heated, e.g. for 24 hours at 450 C., during which time diffusion takes place between the sections giving a smooth variation of carrier concentration throughout the element.
