Abstract
1370384 Thermopiles NUCLEAR BATTERY CORP 18 Oct 1972 [18 Oct 1971 (2)] 52157/73 Heading H1K The disclosure is identical to that of Specification 1,370,382 (see Division G6), but the claims are directed to a thermopile device. The device comprises thermoelectric elements 64 (Figs. 4 and 5), with insulation 67 therebetween, formed into a thermopile block 60 (Fig. 2), a hot plate 62 and cold plate 71 at respective ends of the block, and a plurality of tensioned wires 120 extending from the hot to the cold plate to place the block under compression, the wires having a strength (in lbs./sq. inch) to thermal conductivity (in B.T.U./ft.-hr.- F.) ratio greater than 25 : 10<SP>4</SP>. The block 60 may comprise P- and N-type bismuth telluride in alternation. Selected pairs of elements 64 are connected by shoes 66 to provide a series electrical path through the block. The shoes may be of Pd, Au, Ni, Pt, Ag or alloys thereof, gold-plated Ni, or 92% Au- 8% Pd. Alternative semi-conductor materials are: Sb 2 Te 3 , Bi 2 Se 3 , Sb 2 Se 3 or solid solutions or alloys such as: Bi 2 Te 3 -Sb 2 Te 3 , Bi 2 Te 3 -Bi 2 Se 3 (P- type); Bi 2 Te 3 -Sb 2 Te 3 , Bi 2 Te 3 -Bi 2 Se 3 (N-type) with dopants: AgCl, AgBr, AgI, CuBr 2 , SbCl 3 , Cu, Ag, Te, or I (N-type); Bi, Pb, Na, Cd, In, Sn, Sb, Ni (P-type). Wires 94 which are bonded to the block to provide terminals may be of Pd, Au, Ag, Pt, Ni or alloys thereof. Specifications 1,370,383, 1,370,385 and 1,370,386 are mentioned.
