Abstract

952,678. Thermo-electric devices. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Dec. 18, 1961 [Jan. 23, 1961], No. 45294/61. Heading H1K. A thermo-couple limb comprises a number of intimately bonded layers of dissimilar materials which have optimum thermo-electric properties at different temperatures and it is made by arranging the layers in the order of temperatures at which they exhibit their optimum properties and then compacting them so as to form a unitary sintered body. The thermoelectric efficiency of a number of materials is discussed with reference to Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown) and a thermo-couple embodying the invention is depicted in Fig. 4. The P- type limb is constructed by placing, in a graphite mould, powdered layers of bismuth antimony telluride, zinc antimonide (200 mesh), germanium bismuth telluride (200), germanium telluride (200) and the cold compressing at 500 p.s.i. The limb is subsequently hot pressed at 500‹ C. and 5000 p.s.i. for 45 minutes and then removed from the mould. Between some or all of the layers, "barrier " layers may be formed to prevent undesirable reactions between adjacent layers, these " barriers " consisting, for example, of powders of cobalt, chromium, molybdenum, silicon, tantalum or zirconium. Alternatively nickel or iron layers may be used to ensure good bonding between layers. The N-type limb is constructed in the same way from lead telluride and bismuth tellurium selenide. Both limbs are then soldered to a highly thermally conductive metal strip 14 and electrical contacts 24, 26 of copper or iron are added. The latter contacts may be formed during the moulding process using metallic powders. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 907,901.
