Abstract

Overhead travellers and transporters.-In a charging-apparatus for furnaces of the kind in which a skip e is first lifted to the level of the furnace top by winding mechanism mounted on a car a and is then travelled horizontally until over the furnace mouth, the weight of the skip during its vertical movement is balanced by coupling the winding mechanism to a counterweight. As shown diagrammatically in Fig. 3 in connexion with a pair of blast furnaces, the apparatus comprises two cars a, b, the winding mechanism of which can be coupled by a clutch so that the weight of an ascending skip e for one furnace is balanced by that of the descending skip f of the other. The rails for the cars a, b, may either be in line, or at an angle to one another. When used for a single furnace the winding mechanism on the car is coupled to the winding drum of a counterweight.
