Cover of receptacle interconnected with loadhandling means.-In a charging-apparatus for blast furnaces &c. comprising a skip d with a movable bottom, the lowering of which operates the bell e at the mouth of the furnace, arrangements are provided for securing a more positive opening and closing of the bell. For this purpose the counterweighted beam g, from which the bell e is suspended in the usual manner, is provided with an additional pivoted weight i. The latter is lifted during the rotation of the truck c about its front wheels by a pulley m engaging a rope l, connected at one end to the weight and at the other to some part of the hoist. If the weight of the bottom of the skip and its charge is not sufficient to depress the bell, the truck is rotated further to bring the weight i against a stop on the beam, and the bell is thus relieved entirely of its counterweight.
