Abstract

Charging.-Relates to electrically-operated apparatus for charging blast furnaces, in which automatic dumping-skips L are carried from various storages on low-level runways, which converge into a common runway A, and are discharged through a stationary hopper K into one of a number of automatic dumping-skips M situated on a turntable B which is revolved to bring the full skip M under an overhead hoist 0 running on a track NN. The hoist O transfers the elevated skip M over the furnace top which is provided with a hopper Q having an inlet door S and a bell P, the former being opened by the weight of the full skip and automatically closed, by springs or weights, when the skip is raised after discharging its contents into the hopper. The bell P is opened by the weight of the charge, means being provided to prevent the bell from opening when the hoist 0 is over the furnace top, the speed of opening when the hoist is removed being regulated by a governor. The bell is closed by counterbalance weights U which are mechanically interconnected to ensure symmetrical movement. The empty skip M is lowered on the turntable, which is again revolved to bring another full skip under the hoist 0, and the operation is repeated. The turntable may be replaced by a trolly having a platform sufficiently long to carry two or more skips, and weighing apparatus may be fitted on runway carriages, or a weighing-station may be installed.
