Abstract
238,257. Mitchell, F. G. Feb. 8, 1924. Fixed-chamber measuring apparatus.-Apparatus intended more particularly for unloading coal from wagons with side doors and transferring it to an overhead bunker for coaling locomotives comprises a side-tipping cradle a with axis b arranged near one side, lifting means at one side of the cradle and a receiving hopper j at ground level at the opposite side, a skip-hoist z for charging the storage bunker A, and a measuring device k controlled by the skip for delivering fixed charges from the hopper j to the skip. The measuring device for charging the skip o comprises a fixed measuring chamber k with inletvalve m and a pivoted outlet shoot n both controlled by the movements of the skip. As the skip rises from the position shown the roller 1 raises the shoot n which is secured in the closed position by a catch 2. The skip next engages a lever 4 and opens the valve m. When the empty shoot descends, the valve m is closed and the shoot n lowered. The skip may be operated by endless ropes or chains, or as shown by a rope or chain r wound to and fro by a drum t.
