Fixed-chamber apparatus for granular materials.-Apparatus for loading vessels from barges 10 comprises a skip hoist for delivering measured quantities of coal from a hopper 14 to a loading shoot. Two skips may be provided charged from separate measuring chambers 15, the one being filled whilst the other is being discharged. The skip 16 and measuring chamber 15 are filled and emptied automatically by means of the dooroperating mechanism shown in the Figure. As the full skip 16 rises, the door 150 of the measuring chamber is closed by the bar 160, and a lever 157 is set in the path of a frame 161 on the skip, so that the door will be opened automatically when the skip descends. As the skip rises, and after the door 150 is closed, the frame 161 on the skip engages an arm 145 and opens the door 140 of the storage so that the measuring chamber 15 is filled. As the skip descends, a frame 162 engages an arm 146 and closes the door 140 before the door 150 is opened.
