Abstract

Hoists with guided carriers. -A carrier or cradle a is provided with rollers b, c running in guideways g<1> of a frame g pivoted at d<2>. The guideways g<1> may form an extension of fixed vertical guideways d as shown in Fig. 1, or the carrier may be always adjacent to the pivoted frame. The carrier is provided with a lateral support a<1> for the wagon, and the frame g is provided with a top support or retaining beam k so that when the roller b abuts against a stop m rn the guide g<1>, and the top of the wagon comes against the beam k, further hoisting by the ropes i turns the frame g about the pivots d<2> and trps the wagon. In place of fixed pivots d<2>, the frame g may be provided with curved segments g<2>, Fig. 4, which roll up tracks e<2> over the hopper f. The segments may be provided with teeth as shown to engage the tracks, or the rolling movement may be controlled by flexible bands connected at their opposite ends to the segments and to the tracks so as to wrap on or unwrap from the segments. As shown in Fig. 8, the segments g<2> roll upon bearing surfaces on tracks 8 which move across the hopper on inclined or horizontal tracks 9, and tipping occurs when the motion of the trucks is arrested. For this purpose, tail ropes 13 on the trucks are wound on drums 14 controlled. by springs or weights, and a brake 15 is applied by the closing of a switch by the operator when the truck is in the desired position for tipping. The brake 15 may be applied automatically for tipping with the trucks 8 at successively more advanced positions on the tracks 9. As shown in Fig. 9<a>, a feeler 16 is suspended from a trolly 16<a> on the track 0 so as to rest against the coal f<1> in the hopper. The trolly 16<a> is moved up the track by the truck 8, and a weighted rope 17 connected with the trolly drives a pulley 17<a>, pawl 20<a>, and rotary switch arm 22, to make contact with a fixed switch arm 22b and apply the brake 15. After the coal has been shot, the trolly l6<a> returns by gravity and is stopped by the feeler 16 in a new position. During this movement, the pawl 20<a> is released by a trip member 20<c> and the switch arm 22 is returned to its' original position by a suspended weight 21<d>. In another arrangement, Fig. 10, the frames g roll upon fixed tracks e<2> to discharge the coal into a truck 24 hauled along the full extent of inclined or horizontal ways 9 across the hopper f by a rope 25 which may be actuated by the hoisting drum j. The truck 24 discharges through a bottom door 24<a> which is released automatically by a catch operated by a solenoid on the truck controlled by hand or by a feeder 16 and switch mechanism as in Fig. 9<a>. The door is closed by a cam, not shown, near the top of the track. The truck 24, weighted if necessary, wholly or partly balances the weight of the loaded carrier. and in the other arrangements described above, the usual balance weights may be provided.
