To all whom it may concern:
residing in Milwaukee, in the countyof Milwaukee and 'State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portable Side-Loading Devices for Mixing- Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this speclfication.
This invention has for its object to provide a portable side loading device for mixing machines, comprising a derrick forming tracks or guides on which a skip or car may be elevated by means of a hoist for feeding material to a mixing machine.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a device with means for lifting the skip which is connected thereto in such a manner as to not interfere with the loading of the skip and to permit of the derrick being made of a minimum size for the desired elevation of the skip.
Another object of the invention is to provide an automatic trip door for the skip adapted to be opened by engagement with another part when the skip reaches the desired position for discharging.
Another object of the invention is to provide an automatic trip device for disengaging the clutch of the hoist when the skip reaches the desired osition for discharging.
Another object of this invention is to render the device self contained and adapted for use with standard machines without material alteration thereof.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the portable side loading device for mixing machines herein claimed, its parts and combinations of parts and all equivalents.
Referring to the accom; nying drawings in which like characters oj reference indicate the same parts in the several views; Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portable side loading device constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the skip or car; and, Fig. 4 is a sectional View thereof on the plane of line 4at of Fig. 3.

derrick is mounted on the frame of the mixing machine so as to be removable thererom, the two parallel inclined rails 3 at the front thereof being made of channel iron to constitute tracks or guides for a car or a skip A. The skip is preferably of the hopper construction shown with rollers 12 on a suitably braced cross piece 13 at the discharge end thereof riding within the channel iron guides 3 and flanged wheels 4 mounted on a cross rod 14:- across the open end riding upon these guides.
Grooved pulleys 5 are loosely mounted onthe cross rod 14 and a cable 15, after having its middle portion passing around a pair of equalizing pulleys I at the top of the derrick, passes around the g1 ooved pulleys 5 on the skip, and then over grooved pulleys 6 which are loosely mounted on the cross bar 7 of the derrick which supports the equalizing pulleys I, and then extends downwardly and has its ends coiled upon a pair of hoisting drums E. The hoisting drums are mounted on a. shaft 16 which is connected by means of a clutch F with a large sprocket wheel .17 thereon, the latter being driven by means of a chain 8 from a small sprocket 9 on the drive shaft 18 of the mixing machine.
The clutch F is operated by means of a clutch lever 19 connected by a link 20 with a bell crank lever 21 on a rod 22 extending across the side members of the' derrick frame and a trip rod 23 is connected with the bell crank lever and is mounted in a guide near the top of the derrick frame so as to be movable vertically and carries a trip finger C to be engaged by an arm 10 on the skip when the skip reaches the position for dis charging into the feed spout 2.
The contracted discharge end of the skip A is closed by a l'iinged door 11 which is held in its closed position by a trip lever B mounted on the cross bar 13 and under the pressure of a spring Z). The trip lever has a nose 24 engaging the end of the door while the outer end stands in a position where it will engage the feed spout 2 during the upward movements of the skip so as to be swung against its spring pressure to release the hinge door.
Cam bumpers 25 are secured to the guide rails 3 in such a position as to be engaged by the Wheels 5 and serve the double purpose of forcing the skip to swing outwardly into Patented Feb. 22, 1910.
. and for easing the throw of the skip as it is raised and swings against the guides.
Each of the guide rails 3 a foot plate 26 at its lower end closing the channel iron guides and in this foot plate a. jack screw K is threaded for supporting the device during the operation.
In operation the skip is loaded when in the osition shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1,
by t rowing thematerial into the open top portion thereof, and then the clutch is thrown to start the hoist in operation, the
drums E winding up the cable 15 and serv- -ing first to swing theskip on its rollers 1.2
until the wheels strike upon the cam bumpers 25 and ride therefron'i onto the guide nails 3. Then the skip is raised bodily with the wheels 4 riding on the guide rails and the rollers 12 riding in the'muntil the dis charging position of the skip is reached, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1. Here the trip lever B engages the feed spout of the mixing drum to cause it to swing against the pressure of its spring and release the hinged door 11 so that the contents of the skip discharge therethrough into the feed trough and then into the mixing drum, the hopperlike construction of the skip directing the discharge I in its proper course. Simultaneously with the opening of the discharge door 11, the stop 10 engages the stop finger C and lifts rod 28 so as to throw the clutch lever 19 in a direction to disengage the clutch to stop the hoist, and at that time the operator applies the brake D to retain the skip in its discharge position. i s soon as all of the material. is discharged the brake is released and the skip permitted to de sce'nd by its own weight, the door 11 being first held within the feed spout2 until it is swung back and then when released by passing over the edge of the teed spout it slams shirt with suflicient force to )ress the trip lever B out of its way, said lever by its spring pressure engaging the door as a spring latch and locking it in its closed position. "Nhcn the wheels of the skip engage the cam bumpers they are moved away from the guide rails 3 and start the Ship in its swinging motion so that it is returned to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
VVith'this invention, the use of a double cable connection with the skip, whereby the connecting means, consisting of the pulleys '5, may be located on the sides of the skip, avoids the necessity for a bail-or similar connection which prevents the skip being raised as high as at resent, thus allowing "the derrick to hemar e smaller for a given elevation of the skip. This connecting means is out of the way so asnot to inter- Itere' withth e filling at the skip. Furthereaaiea more by means of the double connection with 'tl'ie'skip above referred to, whereby'the cable makes a loop between the pulleys on the opposite sides of the skip, and the loop passes over the compensating pulleys I, an unequal winding of the cable on the two drums will be compensated for by thefree' dom of the cable to take up the slack on either side, since it is in a single length and not confined at. any place between the two hoisting drums.
' What I claim as my invention is;
l. A portable side loading device, comprising a derrick, inclined -tracks thereon, a skip having wheels for engaging the in clined tracks, pulleys mounted on the sides of the skip, pulleys at the upper ends of the derrick, equalizing pulleys near the upper end of the derrick, a hoist, and a cable passing from the hoist ovcr'the pulleys at the upper end of the derrick and around the pulleys on the skip, and around the equalizing pulleys.
2A portable side loading device comprising a derrick, having inclined track rails, a skip provide with rollers for riding on the inclined trackrails, a hoisting device for elevating the skip on the inclined rails, a door on the skip, a latch for the door, and means for engaging the latch when the skip is in position to discharge for releasin the door and permitting the discharge 0 'the contents of the skip.
3. A. portable side loading device, comprising a derrick, inclined track rails thereon, a skip, rollers on the skip for riding on the track rails, a hoisting means for elevating the skip on the inclined track rails, a clutch for the hoisting means, and a trip means connected with the hoist, and adapted to be engaged by the skip for releasing the clutch when the skip reaches the position for discharge.

A. portable side loading device for mixing machines, comprising a frame adapted to he removably secured to the frame of a standard mixing machine and forming a derrick, inclined track rails on the derrick, a skip, having a hinged door, rollers on the skip adapted to ride on the inclined track rails, a hoist for lifting the'skip on the inclined track rails'and automatic means toopen the door for discharging the contents of the skip into the mixing machine.

A portable side loading device, comprising a derrick, inclined tracks thereon, a skip having rollers to removably engage the track rails and other rollers to permanently engage the track rails, a hoisting device for elevating the skip on the track rails, and cam bumpers in the path of the skip to cause it to swing away from the inclined rails to a position for loading by removing its first mentioned rollers from the track rails.
7. A portable side loading device, comprising a derrick having inclined channel iron track rails, a skip provided with rollers riding within the track rails and other rollers riding on the track rails, a hoisting de vice for elevating the skip on the track rails, and cam means in the path of the skip for causing it to swing upon its first mentioned rollers so as to remove the latter mentioned rollers from the track rails and assume a position for loading.
8. A portable side loading device, comprising a derrick having inclined track rails, a skip provided With rollers for riding on the inclined track rails, some of the roliers being capable of moving away from the track rails, means for limiting the movement of the other rollers to constitute a pivotal connection for the skip, a hoisting means for the skip having connection therewith at a distance from its pivotal rollers, and cam bumpers in the path of the skip to be engaged thereby near the end of its downward movement for throwing the skip on its pivotal connection to a loading position vand adapted to be engaged by the skip for easing its return movement to the guide rails when the skip is swung upwardly on its pivotal connection by the hoisting means.
