CHUTE-LOADER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,800, dated June 24, 1890.
Application filed March 26, 1890.
To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS R. GRIFFITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lVilkes-Barr, county of Luzerne, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Chute-Load er for Loading Coal and other Materials, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a device for preventing breakage of coal or other material loaded by falling from the storage pocket or bin into the car or other conveyance.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying two sheets of drawings.
Figure 1 is a general side elevation showing the loader in connection with a coalbreaker. Fig.2 is an enlarged side elevation of front end of loader. Fig. 3 is a plan view of front end. Fig. 4: is a side elevation of back end of loader. Fig. 5 is a plan view of back end. Fig. 6 is a section on line A A. Fig. 7 is a section on line B B. Fig. 8 is a pair of grooved sheaves upon which the loader rolls.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
In Fig. 1, a a are the pocket or bin stringers; c, the pocket or bin where coal or other material is stored to be loaded; 0, gate or outlet from pocket. E E E is the loader proper. The sides 6 e are of angle-iron and sheet metal riveted together, curved in the manner shown and bending upward in the arc of a circle. A curved bottom f is pro vided, made of sheet metal, terminating at f", which, when the loader is in the position shown by full lines in Fig. 1, (which is the normal position to start loading,) is three or four inches back of the point of lip-chute g. The sides at the back end, Figs. 4. and 5, are coupled together by an iron strap h. Angleplates 2' i (which are flanged to catch timbers j and j) are bolted between side plates 6 e and coupling-strap h. Connecting to the angleplatest' z' is a rod Z, to which is attached a chain 4) and weights 70". On the front end, Figs. 2 and 3, is riveted a hood y, made of sheet metal, forminga pocket to prevent overflow of material when loader is in position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, to which is at- 8erial No. 345,417. The weight 00 is then raised by lifting on chain 0. The loader will then assume the position shown by full lines in Fig. 1, the weights 70 7t being insufficient to hold loader in position, as shown by dotted lines, withoutthe weight so. The clippings from lip-screen S fall into chute A or into the auxiliary chute A. (Shown in Fig. 1.) The two streams thus formed meet at A and are discharged at A into the conveyer t During the operation of loading the loader will be gradually rolled back, 70 coming to rest before this operation is completed, and when the car or conveyance is full will assume again the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. r
The operation of rolling the loader back is done from loadingplatform D by drawing on operating-chain 0. The loading-gate p is also operated from loading-platform D, and is opened and closed to feed material into car or conveyance by drawing and slackening the chain q.
The terminal point f of bottom sheet f, when loader is rolled back, is at 0'', which will not interfere with chute A, above described.
Having therefore described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the bin having the discharge-opening, the chute formed in an arc of a circle and placed beneath said dischargeopening, and the sheaves 011 which the chute rolls, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the bin which has a discharge-openin g, the chute formed in the are of a circle and placed beneath said opening, and the sheaves on which said chute rolls, together with chains attached to said chute leading over pulleys and attached to counterweights, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the bin which has a discharge-opening, the chute form ed in the arc of a circle and placed beneath said dischargeopening, the sheaves on which said chute is mounted, the feed-gate at the end of said chute, and the chain extending from said feed-gate to the operators platform, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the bin which has a discharge-opening, the chute formed in the arc of a circle placed beneath said dischargeopening, the sheaves on which said chute is mounted the feed-gate, the pivoted yoke, and the chain connected to said feed-gate and pivoted yoke and extending to the operators platform, substantially as described.
5. The combination of the bin which has a discharge-opening, the chute formed in the arc of a circle placed beneath said dischargeopening, the sheaves on which said chute is mounted, the feed-gate, the pivoted yoke, and the chain connected to said feed-gate and pivoted yoke and extending to the operators platform, together with the guide-sheave for said chain mounted on the chute, substantially as described.
6. The combination of the bin which has a discharge-opening, the lip-screen arranged with reference to said discharge-opening, the adjustable chute into which the material passing over said screen is discharged and which has its bottom cut away in part, the stationary chute which conducts away the clippings from said lip-screen, and the sheaves on which the first-named adjustable chute is mounted, substantially as described.
7. The combination of the bin which has a discharge-opening, the lip-screen arranged with reference to said discharge-opening, the chute into which the material over said screen is discharged and which has its bottom cut away in part, the stationary chute which conducts away the clippings from said lip-screen, and the sheaves on which the first-named chute is mounted, together with the conveyer into which the lip-screenings are discharged, substantially as described.
