Abstract

1,163,754. Rolling. G.K.N. GROUP SERVICES Ltd. 30 Nov., 1966 [11 Dec., 1965], No. 52695/65. Heading B3M. The effective stiffness of a rolling mill stand for rolling rod stock is modified by mounting yieldable units, Fig. 8, each having a stiffness of the same order as that of the stand, in association with the respective pairs of bearing assemblies 18a, 19a at the opposite ends of the rolls in order to partake of stress set up in the stand. In one embodiment, each yieldable unit comprises a jack wherein a preselected volume of liquid is contained at the bottom of a chamber 25 in which is movable a thrust element 26. In the first stands of a multi-stand mill, a jack 23a may be placed between the bearing assemblies 18a, 19a to increase the effective stiffness of the stands. The stiffness of the last stands is reduced by placing a jack 23a between, for example, the upper bearing 19a and the head screw 22a, the mill arrangement being such as to improve the dimensional accuracy of the rolled stock. The stiffness of the jack is controlled by the volume of liquid in the space 29, which is filled by passing the liquid from a duct (47), (Fig. 7, not shown) through a non-return valve positioned in a cavity (51). The liquid is released from the space 29 by slackening a thrust rod 34 to allow it to flow past a ball element 32, into an outlet chamber 37 and along a transverse duct (44) (Fig. 6, not shown) into the inlet socket (45). The yieldable unit may alternatively comprise a cylindrical body (74) (Fig. 9, not shown) containing a block of rubber (83) instead of a liquid.
