Abstract

1,161,395. Mass spectrometers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 12 May, 1967 [17 May, 1966], No. 21824/66. Heading H1D. An ion collector assembly for incorporation into a mass spectrometer comprises a flat plate 1 on which are mounted a series of individual ion collectors 3 each with its own electrical output connection 4 and each mounted at an independently adjustable position. The whole plate may be inserted into the spectrometer through a vacuum lock and the positions of the ion collectors may be determined against a template constituted by a photographic plate previously exposed in the spectrometer. Alternatively, a plate may be mounted permanently within the spectrometer and the collectors adjusted mechanically from outside the vacuum. Each collector 3 comprises an alumina tube provided internally with a conductive coating and partially cut away at one end to leave a concave portion for receiving the ions. The ion receiving ends of the collectors overlie slots 10 in the plate 1; slots 11 are used for the provision of clamping devices which engage the inner edges of the slots. The ion collectors may be flat plates or, in another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), small spiral electron multipliers mounted on adjustable sub-assemblies which are provided with contact sliders engaging connection wires strung longitudinally across the supporting plate.
