Abstract
1,160,823. Velocity - modulated tubes. ENGLISH ELECTRIC VALVE CO. Ltd. 15 Feb., 1968 [7 April, 1967], No. 16006/67. Heading H1D. In an electron gun for a klystron or a travelling wave tube in which a magnetic field extending along the beam path is arranged to provide, in the gun cathode region, a leakage magnetic field having lines conforming with the desired electron paths, the cathode is disposed within a magnetic member which shapes the leakage field, and a portion of which acts as a focusing electrode. As shown, the leakage field of the main magnetic system of the tube, the end of which system is constituted by magnetic member 1 having a non-magnetic insert of brass 1b, is shaped in the region of the anode 4a and the cathode 6 by a laterally adjustable annular polepiece 2, and by the magnetic member 5, the re-entrant portion 5b of which acts as the focusing electrode.
