Abstract

1,160,273. Improving physical properties. IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KY NOCH) Ltd. 23 Nov., 1966 [13 Dec., 1965], No. 52810/65. Heading B3V. [Also in Division C7] Niobium-base alloys containing a dispersion of hafnium carbide are heated at a temperature not less than 1500‹ C., worked at a temperature between room temperature and 900‹ C., and then reheated to a temperature greater than that at which working was effected but within the range 800-1350‹ C. The initial step may be carried out by heating a fabricated or semi-fabricated part, but may alternatively be effected by a casting or fusion welding operation; working may be by rolling or forging, with a 25% reduction being preferred. The process is particularly applied to alloys containing up to 25% of tungsten, up to 10% of molybdenum and up to 8% of hafnium, with tantalum, vanadium, titanium and boron being optionally present.
