1,159,249. Flame desurfacing. MESSER GRIESHEIM G.m.b.H. 23 Nov., 1966 [24 Nov., 1965], No. 52391/66. Heading B3V. Scarfing apparatus suitable for treating a metal workpiece 4 comprises a nozzle 1 provided with a conduit supplying a stream of oxygen 2, a pair of passages 5, 6 supplying fuel gas, and a conduit 8 arranged to supply iron powder to the interstice 11 between the workpiece and the end face of the nozzle, the said end face being free from gas outlets. The powder may be supplied by a carrier gas or it may be drawn into the reaction zone 7 by the gas flow. At the start of the coating process iron powder is supplied through a second powder feed conduit 15 only by means of a carrier gas and is discharged at 15 above the oxygen stream. The powder is then fed through both conduits 8 and 14, and subsequently exclusively through the conduit 8. The apparatus is supported on tracks 9 and slides across the workpiece.
