Abstract

1,188,137. Flame desurfacing. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 14 Sept., 1967 [14 Sept., 1966], No. 41876/67. Heading B3V. In the flame desurfacing of a metal body W, a continuous sheet of oxygen is supplied across the entire width of the body from a nozzle S, and an addition stream or streams R are fed selectively from one or more nozzles N to remove individual defects. The invention is used in particular for desurfacing hot or cold steel. End nozzles N12, N14 may be used continuously to remove defects from the edges of the body or the nozzles N may be energized selectively under the control of defect locating means and a memory device, such as magnetic tape, to remove individual defects. Nozzles N produce a flat or circular stream.
