Abstract

1290759 Scarfing UNION CARBIDE CORP 24 June 1970 [25 June 1969] 30565/70 Heading B3V [Also in Division F4] In a method of scarfing a ferrous metal, a supplementary sheet-like stream of oxygen 21 is directed towards the metal during the preheating step so as to form with the metal surface a wedge shaped pocket containing the preheating fuel gas streams 11 and a scarfing oxygen stream 9. During the preheating step, upper and lower preheat fuel gas streams 11, 12 emanating from rows of ports 15, 19, the oxygen stream 9 emanating from a slot 8 and the supplementary oxygen curtain 21 issuing from a row of ports 23 are directed at the metal surface so as to quickly form a molten puddle 13. The flow rate of the oxygen stream 9 is then increased and the scarfing cycle carried out by moving the workpiece relative to the scarfing unit. The fuel gas may be natural gas, methane, propane or coke oven gas.
