Ferro-chrome ingots are refined by subjecting them to an isothermal treatment at 1250‹ -1500‹C. under a pressure less than 1mm Hg. The process reduces the contents of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen and non-metallic oxide inclusions in the material. If the carbon content of the ferro-chrome is initially greater than 0À15%, a gaseous oxidizer such as oxygen, CO 2 , air or water vapour should be introduced into the treating furnace; gaseous oxidizer may also be introduced if the carbon content is less than 0À15% in order to accelerate the refining operation.
