Abstract
1,136,758. Producing low-carbon steel. FRIED. KRUPP HUTTENWERKE A. G. Dec. 22, 1965 [Dec.23, 1964; Jan. 9, 1965], No.54464/65. Addition to 1, 014, 103. Heading C7D. Steel is conventionally produced with a carbon content in the range 0À03 - 0À12%, or appropriately more where an oxidizing agent is added to the bath, and is then tapped in the unkilled state, the steel being subjected to vacuum during tapping. A second vacuum treatment follows, whereby the carbon content of the steel is reduced to below 0À008%, or preferably less than 0À005%; this second step may employ any of the known methods of vacuum treatment. Oxygen or an oxygenreleasing substance such as carbon dioxide may be present during either or both of the vacuum treatment steps, preferably in an amount such that there is an oxygen partial pressure of 1 to 20 mm. of mercury in the free vacuum space, while after decarburization is complete alloying elements such as aluminium and silicon may be added under vacuum. The second vacuum treatment step may itself be divided into two stages, an oxidizing agent being employed in the first stage to effect decarburization, followed by use of an inert gas for degasification and possibly alloying.
