Abstract

1,158,435. Shopping trolley. PATON, CALVERT & CO. Ltd. 21 Nov., 1967 [20 Aug., 1966], No. 37423/66. Heading B7B. [Also in Division E2] A two-position handle retaining device comprises a biased lever 17 locatable in a guide 11 with two lateral engagement means 19, 20 outwardly disposed in opposite directions and longitudinally spaced apart in opposite directions from a pivot 16 of the lever, and a double engagement member 15 connectable to the handle 13 and slidable in the guide for movement longitudinally in respect of the lever with the double engagement member being locatable on opposite sides of the pivot for alternative cooperative engagement with respect to the engagement means, said lever having a lever release means 22 associated therewith. In the construction shown which is a handle assembly for a shopping trolley the guide is a tube of substantially square cross-section formed by bending a sheet metal strip and brazing the edges together; the guide has a cap 14 at its top through which the handle passes and the double engagement member is made of plastics material and is a substantially U-shape in cross-section and fits slidably and non-rotatably in the guide 11. The member 15 is provided on opposite sides with castellations which are respectively engageable with the lateral engagement means 19 and 20 of the lever which are also castellations. The means 22 is a plunger slidably carried by the cap.
