In a stretchable girdle or panty girdle having a front panel 14, a rear panel 15 and side panels 11, 12 a band of substantial width extending from the top of the girdle downwardly and around the entire girth of the girdle is more resistant to circumferential stretch than the lower part of the girdle and each side panel includes a portion 16 or 17 having a double thickness of material which extends from the top to the bottom of the girdle and is flanked by portions of single thickness material over an area extending from the bottom of the girdle to the area more resistant to stretch. As shown, Fig. 1, a panty girdle comprises a front panel 14, stretchable only vertically, and a rear panel 15, side strips 28, 29 and an outer layer extending as parts X, Y over the entire area of the girdle, all of two-way stretch material. The outer layer forms the single thickness portions and, with the strips 28, 29, the double thickness portions, of the side panels 11, 12. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 10 and 11 (not shown), the part of the outer layer overlying the front and rear panels is omitted, the front panel (42) tapers into a crotch portion and the rear panel (46), stretchable only vertically, forms part of the leg portions. Panels (49) corresponding to side strips 28, 29 may have lateral extensions (60) secured to the rear panel (46), Fig. 12 (not shown). In a still further embodiment, Fig. 13 (not shown), the side panels (49) and outer layer (44) meet and are secured together at the upper rear centre region above a small pear-shaped panel (62) which forms no part of the leg portions of the girdle.
