Automatic security means comprises a shutter 6 acting as a keeper for a latch bolt (not shown) and solenoid means 9, 14 for causing movement of the shutter between a securing position and a releasing position and for holding the shuttering in one of the positions, and a time switch for actuating the solenoid means. In use the automatic security means is mounted on a door jamb adjacent the latch bolt on the door; the shutter is mounted so that it can slide beneath retaining members 7 on a block 8 and it has a cut-away portion 11 which can be aligned with a channel 12 in the block 8 to release the latch bolt so that the door can be opened. The shutter is moved from the releasing position by a rod 10 of a solenoid 9 which is connected to the shutter via a spring 25 the solenoid being energised by a microswitch of the time switch. The shutter is held in both its releasing position and its fastening position by a rod 13 of a second solenoid 14 the rod 13 engaging a cut-away portion 26 in the shutter in the releasing position of the shutter and a cut-away portion 15 in the fastening position. When the shutter is to be moved the solenoid 14 is also energised momentarily by a microswitch of the clock mechanism; when the solenoid 14 is energised with the shutter in the fastening position a spring 16 pulls the shutter to the fastening position. The clock mechanism shutter and solenoids are contained in a box the cover of which has a lock 24 near one end and which engages a pin 23 near the other end.
