1,175,151. Multiple fastenings. G. K. N. SANKEY (PTY) Ltd. 20 Feb., 1967 [21 Feb., 1966], No. 8014/67. Heading E2A. A filing cabinet has a plurality of drawers arranged above one another, each drawer being provided with a fastening mechanism, means being provided interconnecting the fastening mechanisms, the arrangement being such that the opening of any one drawer operates each of the interconnected fastening mechanisms to fasten the unopened drawers against being opened. In the construction shown the interconnecting means consists of a bar 12 slidable vertically in the cabinet and rigidly attached to the bar 12 is a number of locking plates 13 one for each drawer, the plates 13 each being provided with a slot 14 for the reception of a respective pin 9. For each drawer the pin 9 is carried by a plate 4 which is attached to the filing cabinet by a pivot 5 and which has a slot which coacts with a pin 3 carried by the drawer; the plate 4 is biassed by a spring 8 which is connected between the pin 9 and an anchoring point 10 on the filing cabinet and the arrangement is such that the spring holds the bolt in alternative positions, the pin 3 entering the slot during opening and closing movement of the drawer to move the plate 4 between its two positions; when the drawer is closed the plate 4 holds the drawer in the closed position by the engagement of the pin 3 with the plate 4 but pulling of the drawer pivots the plate 4 to. release it; the movement of the plate 4 causes .the pin 9 to describe an arc and the opening movement of the drawer causes the pin 9 to engage the upper wall of a slot 14 in the respective plate 13 so raising the plate 13 for the other drawers the other plates 13 are then positioned so that a blocking surface 15 moves into the path of the pin 9 so that the other drawers cannot be opened. The bar 12 is also connected to a lock and key mechanism which can raise it further than it is raised by the pin 9 so that all the drawers. are locked by a single key in the closed position.
