Abstract

1,153,465. Suction cleaners. NATIONAL UNION ELECTRIC CORP. 16 Sept., 1966 [21 Oct., 1965], No. 41569/66. Heading A4F. [Also in Division B1] A vacuum cleaner (Fig. 1, not shown) comprises a clogging indicator which responds to rising differential pressure between the inside of the casing, upstream of the fan, and the atmosphere to give a variable visual signal, followed by an audible signal when the filter is further clogged, accompanied by a sufficient intake of air to keep the fan motor cool if the signals are ignored. In Fig. 4 the indicator is mounted in the roof of the cleaner casing and comprises a piston 62 loosely slidable in a bore 60 of a transparent housing. The lefthand end of bore 60 is circular in cross-section, the right hand end is vertically elongated to accommodate two channels (68) (Figs. 3, 5, not shown) which open into the casing between a paper filter bag (41) and fan-motor unit (30). Air continuously bleeds into the housing through passages 97, 112, 83, 82, round the loose piston 62 and out by channels 68. Thus the piston is urged rightwards by the pressure of the air bleed, against the action of spring 72 and the pressure within the cleaner casing acting on the hollow interior of the piston. The lower wall of the housing is covered by reflective or fluorescent material 101 which is exposed to view through a window 100 as piston 62 is moved progressively rightwards (from its position in dotted lines) by the clogging of the filter bag. When the piston clears the end of passage 82 (as shown in full lines) the air bleed increases substantially, causing a reed 102 in passage 112 to vibrate and raising the air flow through the. fanmotor unit sufficiently to keep the motor cool with the filter bag fully clogged. In Figs. 7 to 11 (not shown), there is direct passage for bleed air to the left hand end of piston (134), which slides on an internal support (143), and the reed is dispensed with an audible signal being generated by air flow through aligned apertures (126, 156) into the bore when the piston is withdrawn.
