Application June 21, 1948, Serial No. 34,262
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in filters and the primary object of the present invention vis to provide a radiator filter that prevents the radiator core of a vehicle from' becomingclogged.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a radiator filter that is applied between the radiator and the motor block or Water jacket of a vehicle or internal combustion engine including a baille plate having a screened opening, said baille plate being so disposed in a vertically inclined position that sedimentation will be washed or forced from the screened opening thus retaining the screened opening free from clogging. Y
A further object of the present invention is to provide a radiator lter that is interposed between a vehicle radiatorrand motor block including a pressure conduit that extends between the inlet of the filter and rear portion of the motor block to effectively and efliciently flush the motor block to prevent sedimentation forming therein due to the added pressure acting upon the normal Water flow.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a radiator filter of the aforementioned character that is simple and practical in con.
struction, strong and reliable in use, small and compact in structure, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
.'z claims. (ci. 12s-17o) ing a pair of openings I2 to which' there is rigidly attached the flanged portions I4 of an outlet nipple I6 and an inlet nipple I8 that are co-axial Other objects and advantages reside in the dey tails of construction and operation as more fully Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view of an internal combustion engine having the present radiator filter installed in the outlet from its water jacket;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the present invention; i
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 3-3 of Figure 2; and, l
Figure 4 is a, top plan view of Figure 3, and with parts broken away for the convenience of explanation.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral Il) represents a hollow body of any suitable non-corrosive material havin a vertically inclined plane s o that the same will incline toward the radiator 20 of a vehicle or internal combustion engine 22 having a water jacket or block'24.
Fixed to the spaced parallel side walls 26 ofv the body I0, and to the inner faces of each of the wa11s26, is an upper and lower pair of spaced angie strips 28 and 30, which are disposed at a 4 vertically inclined angle to communicate with an opening 32 provided in the rear wall 34 of the body III. i
Slidably engaged between the pairs of guides or strips 28 and 30, is a substantially'rectangular baille plate 36 that divides the body I0 into two compartments. rThe plate-36 is ,formed with a substantially rectangular opening 38 adjacent the openings I2 and a' screen or ilter unit 4I! is fixed to one face of the plate 36 and registers with the opening38. y v
Removably secured to the outer face of the end wall 34, and closing the opening 32 is a holding plate 4I I that bears against the upturned edge or ange 42 of the plate 35, and a sealing gasket 44 is disposed between the plate 4I and wall 34 to prevent liquid from passing outwardly from the body I0 between the wall 34 and plate 4I.
An annular angle member 46 is'xed to the bottom wall 48 of the body I0 about an opening 50 provided in the wall v48 and is frictionally embraced about the upper open end of the sediment cup 52 that is preferably constructed of a transparent material, such as plastic or glass.
Embracing the body I0 and the cup 52, is a substantially rectangular, open frame 54 the lower side 56 of which engages concaved grooves provided in a plurality of blocks or lugs 58 carried by the closed end of the cup 52. l
The upper side 60 of the frame 54 engages a further concaved groove provided in an adjustable bolt 62 that is supported by a lug 64 and nut 66 which are xed to the upper wall of the body I0.
Fixed to one sidewall of the body I0, is a conduitl 68 having an intake end 10 that extends into ,the nipplel. This conduit 68 is connected by a tubing 12as at 14, to the rear portion of the water jacket 24, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, to provide a means for supplying a fluid pressure from' 'the engine to the rear portion of the water jacket to move forwardly and prevent sedimentation from collecting on the inner walls of the jacket 24. The conduit or tubing 12 thereby provides a flushing line to the rear portion oi the conduit from the forward portion of the engine.
In practical use of the present invention, the outlet nipple II is coupled by a sleeve 'I6 to the radiator nipple 1l. and the inlet nipple Il is coupled as at l to the outlet nipple I2 of the engine 22.
The water entering the body Il through the nipple I8 will engage the baille 36 and will contact the screen I0 before passing through the nipple I6, thus removing sediment in the water which will fall into the cup l2.
It should be noted, that the baille is so inclined that the water will be directed downwardly and Iforwardly to remove sediment collecting on the screen 40.
Pressure on the nipple Il, from the engine 22. will enter the conduit il to be directed into the engine 22 to increase the normal pressure in the engines water system and the velocity of the water in the water system thus preventing sediment from collecting on the inner walls oi' the jacket 24.
In view oi the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art.
A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully compre'- hended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In the cooling system of a vehicle including a. radiator having an intake nipple and a cylinder block having an outlet nipple; a radiator lter comprising a hollow body having an inlet port engageable with the intake nipple of the radiator and an outlet port engageable with the outlet nipple of the cylinder block, means for screening i'iuid passing through the body, means for collecting sediment remaining in the body. and a pressure line between said body and the rear portion oi' the cylinder block.
2. A radiator illter comprising a hollow body having an inlet and outlet, a sedimentation chamber carried by the body, means mounted in said body for screening liquid passing therethrough, and a pressure conduit leading from said body to a cylinder block.
3. The combination ot claim 2 wherein said means includes an inclined baille opposing said inlet and4 outlet, said baille having an opening, and a screen unit carried by the haine registering with said opening.
4. The combination of claim 2 wherein said means includes a baille plate having a screened opening, means carried by said body supporting said plate, and means retaining said plate dis- 'posed within said body.
5. The combination of claim 4 wherein said supporting means includes guides ilxed in said body slidably engaging said plate.
6. The combination of claim 4 wherein said last mentioned means includes a holding plate removably secured to said body. said body having an access opening closed by said holding plate.
'7. The combination of claim 2 wherein said conduit includes an intake end communicating with the inlet of said body.
