Abstract

A yarn of varying colour character along its lengh is produced by feeding two rovings or tops (or groups thereof) of different colour or dyeing affinity to a drafting system through a gripping device through which one roving can pass freely while the other roving is gripped, and vice versa, and intermittently changing over the gripping device so that the two rovings are alternatively gripped and thus alternatively withheld from the drafting system. The rovings pass from the device to the drafting system through a tubular guide which holds the broken end of a roving gripped by the device. When the gripping device changes over, the end of the roving which is being released is caught up and fed to the drafting system by the other roving before the other roving breaks. The gripping device may comprise a pair of intermeshing toothed rollers, one roller being axially divided into halves, each half being only toothed in opposed quadrants and a toothed quadrant in one half being aligned with a plain recessed quadrant in the other half. The rollers are intermittently rotated by a cam drive from the drafting rollers. Alernatively the gripping device may comprise a cylindrical member having two diametrical bores which are disposed at 90‹ to each other, and through which the rovings can pass freely, the member being rotated by for example a cranked arm controlled by a spring and solenoid - between a first position in which an end of one bore is adjacent a roving gripping platform and a second position in which an end of the other bore is adjacent the platform. The gripping device may be changed over at regular or random intervals.
