Abstract

[Also in Divisions B8, C7 and F4] Scrap is recovered from an object such as a used vehicle 17 by passing it through a preheating furnace on a truck 16 to a furnace 1. The truck 16 is raised on a lift to the level of rams 4, 5 which are toothed to grip the vehicle and are rotated while the temperature is gradually raised to melt the non-ferrous metal in turn. The residue of ferrous metal is compacted in a chamber 3 connected to the furnace 1 by the ram 4. The compacted scrap is returned to the furnace 1, a truck 16 is raised to receive it, the rams 4, 5 are withdrawn and the heated scrap discharged in truck 16.
