Abstract
1,151,763. Flexible waveguides. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 2 Dec., 1966 [8 Dec., 1965], No. 52084/65. Heading H1W. A flexible waveguide, for e.g. propagation of the circular-electric H 01 wave mode, comprises a tube 2 of insulating material, e.g. polypropylene, a conductive layer 1 of e.g. copper, a layer 3 of resilient material, e.g. foamed thermoplastic resin, and an outer, flexible, protective sheath consisting e.g. of a layer 4 of polythene, and a metal braiding 5. The waveguide is pressurized to prevent distortion of the cross-section. The tube 2 may be seamed or extruded and the copper layer 6 may be deposited by evaporation, spraying or electroless deposition. Alternatively, it may be formed by helically winding a strip of copper foil on the tube 2. Instead of being continuous, the conductive layer may be in the form of discrete bands forming a mode filter. Two sets of bands separated by a layer of lossy insulating material may be used. The bands in one set overlie the gaps in the other set. An additional layer of insulating material may be interposed between the conductive layer 1 and the resilient layer 3.
