Abstract

1,150,406. LITTON INDUSTRIES Inc. 14 Aug., 1967 [22 Aug., 1966], No. 37340/67. Heading B1B [Also in Division F4] Material is dried by introducing it into a flow of gas which oscillates but has a resultant flow in one direction. For example ground whole fish is pumped into the exhaust pipe 26 of a pulse jet engine 48. In the apparatus described, about 15%, depending (on the distance of the point of introduction of the material from the downstream end of the exhaust pipe, of the moisture is removed here and the material then passes from the exhaust pipe into a drying chamber containing vortices set up by further pulse jet engines such as 55, 56 where the material is dried to fish meal. The lighter particles leave the chamber through the exhaust gas duct 72 and the heavier particles fall through opening 74. The pulse jet is of the valveless typs having the combustion chamber (22, Fig. 2, not shown) nearer the inlet than the outlet (38). The flow through the inlet also fluctuates, the engine drawing cool air in and blowing hot air out. This is directed through an aug, mentor tube 28 into the drying chamber. The two engines 54, 56 are directed at about 30‹ to the horizontal and are inclined to the tangents to the chamber wall. Two other engines (58, 60, Fig. 4, not shown) are horizontal and tangential. The vortices are stabilised by a cone 62 and an apertured plate 64. The drying chamber may alternatively be used with the engine 48 alone.
