Abstract

1,148,366. Stuffer boxes. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP. 10 July, 1967 [8 Aug., 1966], No. 31701/67. Heading D1F. Stuffer box for crimping yarns, strands, slivers, or tows of natural, or artificial fibres, comprises a crimping chamber having a pair of side walls, a positively driven complementary pair of feed rolls having end faces, the feed rolls being disposed transversely adjacent to one end of the chamber and between the side walls, a pair of doctor blades forming the upper and lower portions of the crimping chamber and having a leading edge directly adjacent the feed rolls, a recess in each side wall of the chamber defining a back edge in the side wall, the leading edges of the doctor blades and the back edges of the side walls together bounding the opening to the crimping chamber, a pair of wear plate brackets positioned in the recesses, each bracket acoommodating a wear plate, and biasing means for pressure positioning the wear plates against the back edges of the side walls, and toward the end faces of the rolls. The biasing means respectively include fluid chambers disposed one on each side of the wear plate furthest from an end face of the feed roll, and a plunger in contact with a side of each wear plate bracket with a spring urging the plunger against the wear plate bracket to urge each wear plate against the back edge of the respective side wall. The feed rolls may have grooves or other indentations in their outer periphery.
