Abstract

1,143,165. Protective arrangements. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 21 Dec., 1967 [6 Jan., 1967], No. 845/67. Addition to 1,078,379. Heading H2H. The protective spark gap described and claimed in Specification 1,078,379 is modified so as to comprise two plane electrodes 2, 3 lying in individual planes parallel to the surface of the earth and having a common axis at right angles thereto, the lower electrode 3 being connected to earth by a conductor 5 and the upper electrode 2 connected to a voltage source by a lead 6, the spacing and dimensions of the electrodes, which may be in the form of discs or annular rings, and their positions relative to the surface of the earth being such that the positive and negative flashover breakdown voltages of the spark gap are equal. The electrodes 2, 3 are carried on an insulating support 1 lying along the common axis of the electrodes. Dimensional details of the gap and electrodes are given in the Specification. If desired a resistor may be connected to the apparatus to reduce the current flow when flashover occurs.
