Abstract
1,022,251. Spark gaps. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Feb. 1, 1963 [Feb. 2, 1962], No. 4002/62. Heading H1X. A protective spark gap device comprises two electrodes 10, one at least of graphite, separated by a spark gap 11, wherein one of the electrodes is urged into contact with an electrode holder 15 of a different material at a substantially constant pressure irrespective of different relative expansions in the device. As shown, the electrodes have a conical hole 16 into which a conical plug 17, e.g. of copper, is urged by the action of a bolt 21 which is. screwed into the electrode holder which is also of copper, the electrode being thus firmly held in a recess 14 in the holder. The apex of the cone preferably lies at the centre of action 22 of the bolt in the threaded portion of the holder, so that upon thermal expansion of the assembly the plug can slide within the hole in the electrode whilst a constant force is extended by the holder on the electrode. Each electrode holder abuts terminal plates 23 and are supported from endplates 27 by insulators 26, the end-plates being rigidly coupled together by rods 30 having an insulating sheath 31, the spark gap spacing 11 being adjusted by the widths of shims 33 provided at each end of the rods. In an alternative construction, Fig. 3 (not shown), the insulators 20 are omitted and the plates 23 act as terminal plates, being coupled together by insulating rods.
