736,859. Protective arrangements; supply systems for space-discharge apparatus. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 4, 1953 [June 4, 1952], No. 14096/52. Class 38 (4). In a supply system for a charged particle accelerator 2, the electrodes 3 of which are connected to potential rings 4 shunted by spark gaps 7 and fed from a potentiometer comprising a series of resistors 5 connected across the power supply, the connections between the rings 4 and the electrodes 3 include resistance or inductance of such magnitude as to ensure that a voltage surge occurring at the rings is delayed from reaching the electrodes by a time greater than the greatest time lag of breakdown of the spark gaps 7. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, separate delay-resistors 8 are inserted between the rings 4 and electrodes 3, but, as shown in Fig. 4, separate delay-resistors may be avoided by connecting the electrodes to tappings on the potentiometer resistors 5 at points intermediate of the rings 4.
