Abstract

797,751. Cutting by spark discharge. SPARCATRON, Ltd. Oct. 21, 1954 [Oct. 27, 1953], No. 29671/53. Class 83 (4). In apparatus for cutting or eroding metals by electric spark discharge, a capacitor 7 is connected in the spark discharge circuit and an additional capacitor 5 is provided in series with the current supply. The arrangement is such that the spark-gap is isolated from the current supply. The latter may be direct or alternating current. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, a shunt capacitor 7 is provided between the workpiece 1 and electrode 2 and a series capacitor 5 in the supply lead 4 prevents the supply current passing directly to the electrode. In other embodiments, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), one capacitor may be charged whilst another or others are being discharged or two capacitors may be charged in succession and discharged simultaneously. In these arrangements rotary switches, Fig. 4 (not shown), thermionic valves or spark gaps, which may be ionized, are used to control the charging and discharging of the condensers. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, two capacitors 41, 42 and two rectifiers 43, 44 are used to form a voltage doubler circuit, the capacitors being charged alternately from an alternating current source. Specifications 637,872 and 780,242 are referred to; also Specification 756,727 in the Provisional Specification.
