Abstract
773,782. Cutting by spark discharges. SPARCATRON, Ltd., and RUDORFF, D. W. A. F. July 7, 1954 [July 24, 1953], No. 20646/53. Class 83 (4). In a method of eroding a workpiece by electric spark discharge in which the electrode 6 is maintained at negative potential, reverse flow of current across the spark gap from the electrode 6 to the workpiece 7 is prevented by providing a unidirectional shunt 8 across the electrode and workpiece through which the reverse current flow is by-passed. The shunt may include a selenium or copper oxide rectifier 8, which may be in series with a variable resistance and/or an inductance, or a thermionic valve rectifier whose filament current may be varied, Fig. 4 (not shown). Alternatively the short-circuit may include cyclically operated mechanical contactors. The charging current for the capacitors 4, 5 may be alternating or alternatively direct current may be used.
