Abstract

860,118. Cutting by spark erosion. AGIE AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT FUR INDUSTRIELLE ELEKTRONIK. March 19, 1957 [March 19, 1956], No. 9022/57. Class 83 (4). In the removal of metal by spark erosion using an alternating current supply at least a part of the wave portions of one polarity are suppressed, the amount of suppression being increased in dependence upon the position of the electrode to thereby continuously widen the spark gap and thus compensate for burning-off of the electrode. The spark emission apparatus has switch means 5 for reversing the polarity of the spark gap 2 and current is supplied to the gap, which may be in a liquid dielectric, from a generator having variable voltage and frequency through a change-over switch 3. The polarity reversing switch 5 is bridged by a variable resistance 6 and half-wave rectifier 4 which suppresses at least part of one polarity. The rectifier may be a dry-plate type or a presaturated impedance coil may be used. The resistance 6 varies the amount of suppression and may be adjusted automatically with the advance of the electrode into the workpiece. An electrode 7, Fig. 2, may be used to bore a stepped hole in a blank 8 by using a positivelyconnected electrode for forming the smaller portion and a negatively-connected electrode for forming the larger portion. Another embodiment is described for forming a bore with opposed ribs, Figs. 3a, 3b (not shown). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 773,782.
