Abstract

908,195. Electro.erosion. COLE, M. July 18, 1961 [Aug. 12, 1960], No. 27972/60. Class 83 (4). In the machining of a metal workpiece 13 by spark erosion within a dielectric fluid 11, a rotary electrode 14 is used to assist flow of dielectric through the gap, and the energy of the discharges is progressively reduced whereby the machined surface is made progressively flatter and smoother. A brass or tungsten electrode 14 has on its lower surface a plurality of radial grooves 25, Fig. 2 (not shown), and is rotated through a belt drive 19 by an A.C. motor 20. For some purposes when contamination is to be avoided the electrode may be of the same metal as the workpiece. A servomotor 30 responsive to the average voltage in the gap, adjusts the electrode spacing through gearing 17. Direct current is supplied through resistor 23 to charge a capacitor 22. Both the resistance and capacitor may be variable for progressively reducing the spark energy, or they may comprise a plurality of components with selective switching. The potential of the D.C. source may also be variable. Kerosene, light transformer oil or distilled water is used for the dielectric and due to the rotation of the electrode, debris is continuously removed from the gap. The surface of the machined workpiece may be given a light mechanical or electrolytic polishing when metallographic examination is necessary. A specific example is given.
