Abstract

870,661. Removing metal by electro-erosion; making turbine blades. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. May 27, 1959 [May 31, 1958], No. 17455/58. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXVI] A workplace 15, particularly a turbine blade, is machined by electro-erosion using a disc electrode 16 fed with a combined alternating and direct current. The turbine blade 15, supported in a bracket 14, mounted on a table 11, movable in two horizontal directions by hand wheels 12, 13, has cooling slots 28, Fig. 4, or 30, Fig. 5, machined on its surface by the disc electrode 16 mounted in a chuck 17 driven by a motor 18. The electrode is preferably of copper and is fed through a brush-and-slip ring 25, 26, Fig. 3, with combined alternating and direct current from, a transformer 24 and a direct current generator 27. An electrolyte or a dielectric fluid is supplied to the spark gap through pipe 22 by a pump 20 fed from a reservoir 21.
