Abstract

846,279. Making turbine and like blades; removing metal by electric erosion. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. Dec. 10, 1957 [Dec. 10, 1956], No. 37717/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXVI] In a turbine or compressor blade having a shank portion 12 lying between a root platform 11 and a root fixing portion 13, and a supply duct 19 in the shank portion for supplying a cooling or heating fluid to longitudinal passageways 15 in the blade portion 10, the supply duct 19 has its axis on a circular arc, Fig. 7, so as to communicate with all of the passageways and is formed by electric arc or spark erosion or by anodic action. The duct 19 may be of circular, elliptical or triangular crosssection and its axis may be perpendicular or inclined to the blade axis. The blade with its passageways may be produced by any of the methods disclosed in Specifications 744,984, 826,498 or 846,277. For forming the duct 19 the blade is clamped to a rotary table 71 mounted on balls 72 and driven by a variablespeed motor 77. A hollow copper electrode 80 of arcuate form is mounted by a screw 91 on a lever 81, 82 pivoted on a vertical support 73. During erosion the electrode is vibrated by a cam 84 driven by motor 85. An electrolytic bathing liquid such as sodium silicate is supplied by compressed-air from a tank 89 through pipe 88 to the hollow electrode. The blade is surrounded by a chamber 94 having a drain pipe 95, Fig. 8 (not shown). A direct current, or an alternating current superposed on a direct current is supplied to the electrode and blade through conductors 92, 93; the electrode is at positive potential.
